Imagine if you could develop a framework to guide your assessment and treatment of dizziness.

This 4 hour online course was developed specifically to help you build that framework combining evidence base and years of clinical experience.

LET'S GET STARTED

Whether you work with a sports team, with seniors, in a hospital, or a bustling private practice you may be looking to improve your understanding of dizziness as you get stuck at times with what to do. We get it as we have been there.

Dizziness is a common complaint across the lifespan, but sadly it is also poorly understood and treated.

The thing is, it does not have to be this way.

Course Details

After taking this module you will have a clear picture of how common dizziness is and its impact on our society. In addition to this, after reviewing module 1 you will have a better idea of the many different medical conditions that can result in dizziness.

Highlights:

  • To the point literature review regarding the prevalence and impact of dizziness.
  • This module looks at the person as a whole and outlines the many causes of dizziness.
  • Provides some great external educational resources for you and your patients.

Note: References and slide handouts will be provided in each lesson as a PDF download.

From module 1, we reviewed that vestibular problems are conditions affecting the brain and inner ear and are the most common cause of dizziness across the lifespan. After taking module 2 you will understand the “nuts and bolts” (anatomy and physiology) of how the vestibular system actually works.

After developing an understanding of the vestibular system, the second part of the module will help you classify dizziness into three categories, being central (brain), peripheral (inner ear), and non-vestibular disorder. In each of these categories we review the most common conditions that can cause dizziness.

By completion of this module you will be able to compare and contrast the different causes of dizziness and confidently categorize them as being a peripheral, central, or non-vestibular disorder.

This module is key as in order to treat dizziness effectively you have to understand the different causes of dizziness. NOT ALL DIZZINESS IS THE SAME.

Highlights:

  • Downloadable anatomical images that are copyright and royalty free. We made the images specifically for this course not only to enhance your learning experience, but also the learning experience of your patients. Also, feel free to use them as an educational tool in your social media or for any presentation that you may be asked to provide.
  • Quiz to help reinforce the material reviewed. Don’t worry you will ace it.
  • Multiple “Cheat Sheet” PDF downloads that will be a quick reference for you in your busy practice.
  • Multiple BONUS extras to enhance the learning experience. We will keep this under wraps and keep it a mystery until you get the course.

Building from module 2, this module goes the next step and covers the vital components of the patient history and examination. There are key aspects in both the history and examination that need to be pulled out to help determine if the dizziness is due to the brain, inner ear, or some other condition. Not having the knowledge and clinical skills to accurately tease out the source of the dizziness will lead to frustration for both you and your patients.

This module ends the course with a treatment technique for the most common form of BPPV. Now there are different techniques out there, but this is our “Go To”.

Highlights:

  • PDF downloads of Functional Outcome Measures specific to dizziness and unsteadiness. These are great tools to track patient progress over time and to determine your patients level of perceived disability given the dizziness.
  • Downloadable PDF "Cheat Sheets”.
  • Written step by step instructions as well as instructional videos demonstrating KEY oculomotor tests in room light as well with visual fixation removed (i.e. patients vision is in the dark).
  • Introduction to the use of infrared goggles.
  • Multiple video examples of positive oculomotor findings coming from central and peripheral vestibular disorders.
  • Step by step instructions in both written and video format showing our “Go To” technique to successfully treat the most common form of BPPV.
  • Downloadable PDF educational handouts for your patients.
  • List of resources to help you set up your clinic or office.

In summary, by the end of this course you should:

  • Understand the prevalence & impact of dizziness.
  • Understand the various causes of dizziness, as well as the anatomy and physiology of the vestibular system.
  • Be able to perform an assessment and confidently determine if the dizziness is due to a central, peripheral, or non-vestibular disorder.
  • Be able to determine those who will respond to vestibular therapy and those who need to be referred for further consultation.
  • Develop an initial treatment plan for those who will benefit from vestibular therapy.
  • Be able to successfully treat the most common cause of BPPV.

Common questions people ask before enrolling for this course:

That is a great question and the simple answer is no. There are actually no courses that will allow for this. As we outline in this course dizziness can be due to many causes including the vestibular system, cardiovascular system, metabolic system, conditions affecting the neck, mental health, and so on.

Rather, this course is aimed at developing a framework to assist you in subcategorizing dizziness to determine who you can treat and who needs to be referred elsewhere. The course material will also cover how to differentiate and understand the treatment principles of the most common central, peripheral, and non-vestibular conditions that you will see clinically.

Ideally, one-on-one mentoring or an in person course with a high instructor to participant ratio is the best way to get feedback on your skills. However, barriers to this such as course availability, along with the cost of your time and money can make this a challenge. We understand this as we have been there.

So, to address this with an online  course we have developed easy to follow step by step written and video “How To” instructions of all of the techniques outlined in this course. You can simply download them immediately after the course to practice with your peers. We encourage you not wait for the first patient to give it a try. Be ready beforehand with the feedback of your peer. If there are still questions about your technique, we have weekend courses and online mentoring available.

There are pros and cons of a weekend and online course. A weekend course allows for more dialogue, time to ask questions, and training specific to the needs of the group. As indicated previously, as long as there is a good instructor to participant ratio, this will also allow the instructor to ensure that each participant can perform the techniques correctly. The cons of a weekend course are the limited availability, time and expense.

Our typical weekend courses also go deeper into the treatment of BPPV, vestibular hypofunction, motion sensitivity (PPPD), and concussion. This information will, however, be added to our online platform with time and will compliment this 101 course. Remember that this is a 4 hour course and not a 2 day course.

Some of the pros of an online course are:

  • The ability to proceed at your own pace when you want. Life is busy, we get that. With Understanding Dizziness 101, we have also made it easy to start and stop when you like by breaking the course into modules and bite size lessons that are easy to get through. Who likes reading a book without chapters? Online courses should be no different.
  • You have access to the entire course for a year. Let’s face it, when we go to a weekend course or conference how much of the information do we remember a month later? To maximize your learning we actually want you to go over the material again from time to time.
  • The ability to do the course with peers or coworkers. This can be a HUGE saving. Instead of sending multiple staff to courses, with an online course you can pay once and have all of your team go through the course. Or, you and a few friends can pay for the course and divvy up the cost. The certificate of completion will, however, be made out to the one who originally enrolled in the course. Do not feel guilty doing this. We actually recommend it knowing that there is a BIGGER plus to this in that you can review and practice all of the techniques with those who are taking the course with you.
  • This course has LOADS of downloadables that are not standard with a traditional course. These include images, PDFs of the slides, instructional videos, "Cheat Sheets", and more.
  • Less time and financial investment. There is no need to travel which will incur costs for transportation, accommodation, eating out, and potential loss of income while attending a course. Maybe, more importantly is your time. We only have 24 hours given to us each day and an online course frees time as there is no need to travel. That means more time to do what is important to you.

You will have unlimited access to the course from the date of enrolment. There is no expiry date.

For the investment of 4 hours and the cost of the course you will have unlimited, 24/7 access to the online course which will include:

  • PDF downloads of the slides that you can reference as needed.
  • Multiple “cheat sheets” for rapid access during your busy day.
  • Downloadable images that are copyright and royalty free for you to use as you wish.
  • Numerous BONUS’ that will help you reinforce the material covered. We still won’t let it slip as to what they are.
  • Step by step videos demonstrations and written instructions of all of the techniques covered in the course.
  • Video demonstrations of positive oculomotor findings associated with central and peripheral vestibular disorders.
  • A literature review with a PDF of the references.

Bottom line, our goal is that you experience a transition from feeling uncertain in your abilities or understanding of dizziness to feeling confident in your skillset and experience improved patient outcomes along with an increased demand for your services with this patient population should you choose.

Some Things You May Not Have Considered

Even if you have taken some training and seen patients with dizziness, ongoing training can:

1) Enhance your knowledge, skill set, and overall confidence. We have all picked up techniques from here and there, but sometimes forget when to use them or how to actually do them correctly. Or, we may feel unsure about our knowledge base or skill set altogether. This course will develop a framework to allow you to improve your clinic reasoning and  skill set, resulting in increased confidence to address this unique patient population.

2) Improve your patient outcomes and more importantly their quality of life. Besides making a living, this should be what fuels us to go to work each day. With increased knowledge and skillset your outcomes should improve. What a sense of accomplishment you will feel each time you look back and see how you made an impact on someones quality of life.

3) Increase your profile and reputation in dealing with this patient population. This can lead to an increased referral base, valuable partnerships, and all sorts of exciting and unexpected opportunities that add to you or your clinics overall income.

Even though the reasons to pursue ongoing education is clear the process involved can be anything but. Things get in the way. We get it:

  • Limited accessibility due to limited courses, locations, times as well as the cost involved.
  • Sometimes it is also easy to give up when we experience failure and have limited support.
  • Also, life can be BUSY.

The 3 Reasons We Have Found Why Most Care Providers Don’t Pursue This Field

Not sure if it is worth the time, expense and effort.

There is such a need in this field and online training helps jump start you in the right direction, while minimizing the need to travel and miss time from work and family.

Somebody else is already doing it.

I am sure that there is more than one book in the local bookstore, more than one song on the radio, or more than one hair salon or burger joint in your hometown. There is always room for more. People want and deserve options. A little competition can also be better for the consumer which in this case is our patients.

I tried it before … It did not work … It is complicated.

With any type of learning, yes, you may fail at times, but we can either just experience the frustration of it and give up or learn from it. It also does not have to be complicated, especially when you can get a roadmap from someone who has already taken the path you are on.

Even though the assessment & treatment of dizziness has become a quickly growing field - it’s not an evenly distributed one.

A few practitioners will get a HUGE piece of the pie, while many others fizzle out.

As long as you can avoid the common mindsets that limit most practitioners you will experience an improvement in your outcomes with dizziness. This will result in you having a bigger IMPACT on the quality of life for those under your care and increasing your caseload with this population if you so choose.

The key ingredient to this is understanding the different causes of dizziness.

With your permission, it would be an honour to guide you in this process.

"Although I have treated BPPV in the past, what I learned was from a colleague many years ago. Either assessment and treatment have been somewhat refined since then, or I started doing things differently on my own (I'm not too sure), but this course really helped to confirm some things I have been doing correctly, but also helped me to see where I can make improvements for better client outcomes. This course information also gives me more confidence; in continuing to treat clients with dizziness or to be able to refer on when I am concerned the problem is beyond my scope of practice. Excellent course! "

"I can now take a focussed history and exam, and know at least the basics of what I am dealing with and when to refer. I would recommend this course. It was advertised and promised as Dizziness 101, so I appreciated the knowledge, without being completely overwhelmed."

Heather

"Downloads are fantastic - and very surprising that you allow download of video. So much provided on each page (video, downloads and right sided outline), yet it looks very straightforward and not confusing. That’s hard to do. I really like that."

Stacey

"I will be able to identify and refer as appropriate!"

Jessica

"I really appreciate your approach. I think the pace of your lessons was good. Great flow to the content. Your years of experience in this area are evident through your confidence in teaching through lecture and demonstration. Thank you for choosing to share your knowledge this way! Personally, I find it difficult to commit to a weekend course, or even a webinar at times, so this online option is perfect for me."
